Google, Sun Microsystems involved in StopBadware.org project

Search engine giants Google are collaborating with Sun Microsystems to launch a new initiative against spyware and malicious applications, which have become so widespread on the internet. These two tech giants would be funding a new anti-spyware coalition, which is expected to be launched today.

This coalition would have its online presence located at StopBadware.org. The website would help web users to deal with adware, spyware, rootkits and other malware threats. Reports coming in claims that the initiative is also supported by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School (The site seems to be hosted in Harvard University Netblock) along with Consumer Reports WebWatch.

Vint Cerf is also involved as he is expected to on board as an adviser to the coalition. Cerf had recently joined the search engine company as its chief Internet evangelist. In addition, another big name Esther Dyson is also said to be involved. Dyson is the former ICANN board chairman and is also involved in the publishing of influential Release 1.0 newsletter.

Looks like Google has plans to provide the web users more than just the recently launched Google Pack to make their internet experience more pleasing. It is good to see that Google and Sun are involved in a project, which should have been started by Microsoft in the first place. Instead, Microsoft is working hard on developing Windows OneCare Live Beta, which is expected to be a paid service for providing similar facilities.
