Intel and others to invest more in Itanium
Microprocessor giants Intel have faced a torrid time with their Itanium range of microprocessors. Server makers are ignoring this particular processor. However, Intel has no plans to discard this platform, as it seemed like since the last couple of months. The company with support from tech giants Hewlett-Packard has announced fresh investments to save the project.
This group of tech companies has pledged to spend $10 billion over the remainder of the decade to support Itanium. The platform was designed initially to supplant x86 chips as a mainstream processor architecture. However, it is now targeted towards the “mission-critical” server applications, which are mostly served, by IBM’s Power and Sun Microsystems’ Sparc processors.
Carol Barrett, director of enterprise platform marketing for Intel said in a statement: “The marketplace is looking to go through a transformation over the course of the next several years, which is really why we are investing. We think we have critical mass behind us and exciting opportunities coming to us in the future.”
The processor range was discarded by how IBM and Dell last year. However, the customer base for Itanium has improved in the last couple of months.
