Belgacom closes down Skynet Music Club to support Apple iTunes
Belgium’s leading telecommunications firm Belgacom has announced their decision to shut down Skynet Music Club. This online digital store has been running since the last three years. They managed to sell as many as 1.5 million songs last year and also provided free video clips and concerts to its ADSL subscribers.
The company would now be letting their customers shift to Apple’s iTunes service. To make the offer more lucrative for the end users, they would be giving away 20 free downloads from the Apple service. Another plan is to let the users pay through their telephone bills for their downloads online.
Belgacom would now also be selling Apple iPod music players through their service outlets. This would however come as a disappointing to Loudeye who were providing technical know-how to Belgacom for their digital store. They are now planning to improve upon their services by offering ‘triple play’ music service that will enable account holders to access their music wherever they are, on any device.
They would make this possible by providing support for multiple interfaces, codecs, and DRM technologies.
