Kama Sutra worm hit India hardest

As per incoming reports, India was one of the hardest to be hit by the much in news Kama Sutra (or Nyxem) virus. However, the good news is that the damage caused by this worm is pretty low compared to earlier instances of global hits by a single worm or a virus.

As per incoming reports, the worm affected as many as 300,000 machines worldwide. However, this is just a statistic and real figures would never be known. The good news is that few users have reported that they lost data due to the virus striking their machines.

Experts believe that the online reports led to people taking enough precautions, which led to a better-prepared network of computers to handle the onslaught of this worm, which was developed to hit the computers on the third of any month.

The worm is known by various names amongst the developers of security applications for computers. Nyxem-E is also known as Blackworm, MyWife, Kama Sutra, Grew, and CME-24. It targets 11 different types of files present on a system namely:
DMP – Oracle files
DOC – Word document
MDB – Microsoft Access
MDE – Microsoft Access/Office
PDF – Adobe Acrobat
PPS – PowerPoint slideshow
PPT – PowerPoint
PSD – Photoshop
RAR – Compressed archive
XLS – Excel spreadsheet
ZIP – Compressed file

The countries reported to be affected most by this worm are:
1) India – 37%
2) Malaysia – 23%
3) Indonesia – 9%
4) Thailand – 5%
5) Philippines – 4%
6) United Arab Emirates – 3%
7) Singapore – 3%
8) United States – 2%
9) Peru – 2%
10) Sri Lanka – 1%
