Clovertown: Intel to come out with a quad-core server chip by next year

Intel has set itself big goals and has claimed that they would be launching their first processor with four cores in early 2007. The company is working hard on snatching away the initiative taken by their little competitor AMD who showcased the first PC based dual core processors last year.

Intel has also set themselves the goal of selling around 60 million dual-core chips this year. This should make up for around 25% of all processor sales from the company. The company recently launched the first notebooks powered by the dual core Centrino Duo processors in collaboration with Apple Computers.

Intel’s new chip Clovertown bundles four processors in a single package. This makes the process quick enough to perform several tasks simultaneously and does not consume much power in the process. They would be targeting this processor range at server computers that run corporate networks and host Web sites on the Internet.

AMD has taken significant market share when it comes to server-based microprocessors from Intel and they are now aiming at striking back with new and better processors.
