Microsoft, BT and Virgin Mobile and Mobile TV in UK

The latest news coming in claims that the three giants of their industries Microsoft, BT and Virgin Mobile are closing on launching the Mobile TV services in UK. The Financial Times was the first to report that these companies will announce Europe’s first nationwide mobile digital television broadcast service on Tuesday.

The launch is expected to be announced at the 3GSM World Congress currently going on in Barcelona, Spain. BT has refused to comment on this story but have confirmed that they are due to make an announcement at this exhibition.

Both BT and Virgin have been said to be working on this technology since quite sometime. BT had earlier revealed that they were working on a product called BT Movio, which it initially planned to offer to Virgin Mobile user. They even did a trial for four months in 2005 among 1000 users in London.

iPhone to be a major challange for growth of mobile TV services

Mobile TV,though launched in Europe and Asia with differing technologies has overcome most of these with multistandard phones such as Samsung SCH-U620.The support of all standards in the same phone (DVB-H,FLO,DMB-s and DMB-T) demonstrates the power of chipsets available today and give a hope for mass production of phones rather than being carrier specific.

Carrier specific production runs tend to sap considerable resorces and prevent the handset prices from falling.Real growth in mobile TV will now come from greater availability of handsets and services.

New launches such as iPhone, which incidentally do not support any form of mobile TV are still likely to divert all attention for the year 2007 on its features and away from mobile TV.iPhone, with support for only Youtube and Google video ( no support of any mobile Tv standard or Cellular TV such as mobiTV) means that so far as the US is concerned, the focus will remain on what can be viewed on the iPhone.

The industry really needs to meet this challange.
