South Korea plans to establish a Linux City!

The country of South Korea is going one-step ahead with the adoption of Linux as the primary operating system as they have decided to establish a Linux city and university where they would test whether it is possible that Linux can be used to replace Windows as the principal operating system.

This plan was announced last week by the country’s Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC). They have now invited existing universities and local governments to apply to host the Linux enclaves. MIC director Lee Do-kyu said in a statement: “Already many universities and local governments have shown interest in the project. We expect big-sized entities will join it.”

The government would also be providing the funding for the project in the first year. The condition is that the city and the university would be required to run all their computers on the Linux platform. The experiment is necessary considering as per estimates, less than one per cent of PCs in Korea run Linux. This is lower than the global average and the government wants that they should remove this dependence upon a single company for their computing requirement.
