US government considering banning DRM rootkits

The controversies caused by the Sony BMG’s attempt to load up their audio CDs with DRM technologies has resulted in a situation that the US government is now considering banning them in consumer’s interest.

The technology used by Sony was found to be defective and some security companies even labeled it spyware considering the application did not inform the users about the kind of files it was loading on the computer being used to play the CDs.

The latest news coming in says that the US government is now considering introducing legislation if companies continue to distribute copy-protection measures that compromise computer security.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials had a meeting with the representatives of the Sony BMG company after the controversy and media reports claim that the company was told to avoid using such techniques leading to problems for the end consumers.
