Project Higgins: IBM and Novell responds to Microsoft InfoCard
Software giants Microsoft recently announced their new identity-management technology called InfoCard. Critics believe this to be yet another attempt to do something, which they failed to do with the Passport initiative.
However, this time the company would be facing serious competition as IBM and Novell have decided to join hands on an open-source security project that promises to deliver similar facilities.
This project is called Project Higgins and it is also being supported by e-commerce startup Parity Communications and Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society. This group would be employing what they call “social commerce” for managing online personal information.
The project is overall managed by the Eclipse Foundation. The aim of the developers is to support a variety of platforms including Linux, Windows, and other operating systems in addition to most available identity-management systems.

If Microsoft wins this, it’s the worst nightmare for the future of the web. Identity management is so important that it’s essential that there will be one standard supported by all players. Otherewise the web will be divided and walled.
Users will go only to website supported by their identity management standard.
IBM seemes more flexible, they say Higgins will support Microsoft and any other standard and make them compatible.
