Napster blames Microsoft for not so impressive performance
Napster can be considered as the original granddaddy of the online music world. From being the headache of the music industry for enabling music piracy on the internet, it turned legitimate a couple of years ago.
However, the company has failed to capture much market share as Apple has taken the lead with their iTunes digital store. Napster has now blamed Microsoft and the glitches in their Windows Media Player application for failure to attract enough new customers as they are struggling to compete against Apple.
Napster Chairman and Chief Executive Chris Gorog said in a statement: “There is no question that their execution has been less than brilliant over the last 12 months. Our business does rely on Microsoft’s digital rights management software and our business model also relies on Microsoft’s ecosystem of device manufacturers.â€
He further added: “It’s a lot more complex to get organized properly than it is to build one device and one service as Apple has done. It’s always been painful at the introduction of new technologies. But it always takes shape like it’s done in the past.”
Microsoft provides links to various online digital services for downloading legitimate content from the internet and Napster is just one of them. Microsoft in fact recently went into collaboration with MTV for their URGE digital music service. This is further expected to put a dent in Microsoft’s relationship with Napster.
