Google Brazil told to explain security measures on Google Orkut
Search engine giants seem to be in trouble yet again related to one of their unofficial products Orkut. Their Brazilian unit has been asked to appear before authorities to explain what kind of actions they are taking to curb crimes allegedly being committed through its Orkut chat rooms.
Google’s Orkut is exceptionally popular in this country and reportedly, a lot of illegal actitivities are being carried out through their social networking service. Google does not list Orkut as one of their official products but still employees the people who have developed this service in their time working for the company.
These summons have been issued after a complaint was filed with the ministry by the nongovernmental organization Safernet. As many as 73% of all registered members on Orkut are said to be from Brazil which makes it important for the company to have extra monitoring people in the country.
Safernet President Thiago Nunes de Oliveira talked about their experiences with Google and Orkut: “Since June, we have sought out Google to request preventive measures against crimes that are practiced on Orkut, but we never got a response.â€
