Intel introduces Sossaman low power chips

The leaders in the microprocessor market, Intel has finally announced their “Sossaman” range of microprocessors. Sossaman is a newly developed low-voltage version of Intel’s Xeon server processors, which is more power efficient and as a result emits less heat.

Intel’s dual core processor based on this technology would be called Xeon LV and it consumes just around a maximum of 31 watts of power compared with a range of 110 to 165 watts for other Xeon models.

Intel has also revealed the pricing and the processor would cost $423 for a 2GHz model and $209 for a 1.6GHz model in quantities of 1000 units. The microprocessor market has been buzz with demands for processors, which consume little electricity, and Intel has finally revealed this range of processors to counter the claims that they are the biggest industry culprits when it comes to power consumption by processors powering the computers.

Intel would be targeting Xeon LV at the lower end server models considering it is only a 32-bit chip. The more expensive Xeon models are 64-bit. This has however already led to Hewlett-Packard deciding to not release products powered by this new range of processors. Intel has however confirmed that a 64-bit replacement is due soon.
