BMW India plant to be ready by 2007

Germany based automaker and the world’s largest maker of luxury cars BMW has already set its eyes on the Indian market. The company has said that they expect their Indian plant located in Chennai to be ready by 2007.

BMW has located their plant in India at Mahindra World City near Chennai. Peter Kronschnabl has been appointed as the President of BMW India Pvt. Ltd. and he informed the media personals that civil work at the site had already commenced in January.

BMW India would be a fully owned subsidiary of the German auto major and they expect to sell over 1,000 cars in the first year of its full operations. The plant would have a capacity to manufacture around 1700 cars a year in a single shift operation.

Klaus Berning, Senior Vice-President (Sales), Asia Pacific, Africa and East Europe, said in a statement on company’s plans for India: “We do not have aggressive sales targets. We want Mr. Kronschnabl to develop the brand and look at quality. The premium segment, in which BMW operated in India, saw a sale of 3,000 units last year. This segment will have a steady growth.”

The Indian unit of the company would be making BMW 3 and 5 series cars. They would also be bringing in the 7 series and X3 and X5 vehicles into India as CBUs (completely built units).
