Hewlett-Packard India develops gesture-based input device
Hewlett-Packard has announced the development of a revolutionary pen-based technology, which would allow the users to compute in their respective languages even without prior knowledge of English or typing.
They call this product the gesture-based keyboard and it has been developed by the company’s researchers working in HP Labs India. HP believes that such a product has huge potential for Indian languages derived from the Devanagari.
This means that the company has a potential customer base of as many as 1.5 billion non-English speaking people. HP’s new product is essentially a low-cost and rugged solution that helps solve the phonetic language entry problem by allowing users to input data the way most people learn to write with a pen.
Dick Lampman, HP Senior Vice-President, Research and Director, HP Labs said in a statement on this product: “The gesture-based keyboard can help bridge the digital divide by simplifying the use of IT. HP Labs India is working on a wide range of other new information and communications technologies for India and other rapidly growing markets by understanding the relevant social, cultural, economic, and technological drivers.”
