Riya Beta is out

Just got a mail from the development team. The team which made news with rumors of Google interested in acquiring them. You can now go and register there. Here is the details from the email message:

Welcome to the Beta!

Whew! After many months of saying, “soon”, it’s finally here. And you’re one of the first to be invited! We know, it took a little longer than originally anticipated, but I think you’ll agree that Riya.com isn’t a simple web application that can just be whipped out in a fortnight.

Nope. We’re talking about some mega-breakthroughs in technology. Which brings us to the next point: we’ve still got a way to go. We aren’t perfect. Far from it. Munjal likes to tell people that the technology behind the face recognition at Riya.com is at the same level as his son, Deven, a two-year old. With your feedback and many hours of research and development, our goal is to bring the recognition up to superhuman…but that’s a little way off.

Riya.com isn’t just about face recognition. It is about search. It is about rethinking photosearch so that we are searching inside your photos, not around them. Huh? you ask…

Through the face and text recognition, through the explicit utilization of your natural photo metadata (like date, time, location, etc.) and through any of the previous work you’ve done in organizing your photos, Riya.com automatically tags your photos so that you can start to find the exact photograph you are looking for. In the future, we will also be leveraging your online life to enable auto-tagging of events and such (feel free to make suggestions).
