Toshiba considering delaying launch of HD DVD players

With the movie studios preparing for launching the movies on the HD DVD format next month, Toshiba itself is considering delaying the launch of the HD DVD players to coincide with the launch of the content for these players.

Toshiba is currently planned to launch the HD DVD players this month itself. They are facing stiff competition from Sony who has developed their own Blu-Ray standard. The market for home videos is worth a massive $24 billion and both Toshiba and Sony want to be the major player in this segment.

Toshiba had said in the month of January that they would be launching its first players, the HD-XA1 and HD-A1, for $799 and $499, respectively in March. The company has now said in a statement: “Toshiba is currently working with the studios as well as our retailers, to finalize the sale date of our players. In order to maximize the launch of HD DVD, we intend to synchronize the launch of our players with HD DVD title releases.”
