Microsoft responds in the South Korea antitrust ruling

Software giants Microsoft has finally filed an appeal against the antitrust ruling in South Korea related to their monopoly in the Operating Systems market. The courts had instructed the company to unbundle its media player and messaging service from its Windows Operating System.

The company was given another option to include products from their rivals if they are not ready to remove Windows Media Player and Microsoft Messenger application from the Windows OS.

Microsoft said in a statement about their appeal against this ruling: “Microsoft today filed an appeal with the Seoul High Court to review the decision in the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) case against Microsoft.”

The company added that what they do is in the interests of the consumer considering it brings added functionality to the operating system. And it is not causing any problems for their customers considering they can anyways download competing applications from the internet within a couple of minutes.

The ruling had also fined the company a sum of 32.5 billion won. Interestingly, statistical reports have shown that consumers are not really interested in a Windows version, which comes without the Media player application. The company offers an unbundled version of Windows XP in Europe, which has not exactly sold very well in the market.
