Honda Fuel Cell Car coming in four years?

A senior Honda executive has said that the company is just around four years away from launching a fuel cell car in the market. Honda is aiming to become the first company to launch a commercial fuel cell car on the roads.

Steve Ellis, manager of fuel-cell marketing for American Honda Motor said in a statement: “I don’t think it’s critical to be first. But maybe it’s more important than what is first is done with extremely high quality and (with) products that leave a positive lasting impression on the customer.”

However, he added that no matter who comes out first, it would be tough for the segment to sell a large number of cars in the initial year. These next generation cars are expected to form only a miniscule fraction of the cars that would be sold in the coming years.

This would also mean that most automakers would be selling them at below cost price to get the technology popular amongst the consumers. Honda has already showcased a FCX hydrogen-fuel cell concept car.

Automobile companies are hoping that these fuel cell cars would co-exist with hybrids, compressed natural gas and conventionally powered autos for decades.
