MySpace.com cleans up bogus profiles

MySpace.com is one of the fastest growing online communities on the internet and is becoming one of the most recognized brands in the digital world. However, the service is also blamed for its lack of checks on bogus profiles and has been making news for bad reasons on this front.

The online service has removed 200,000 profiles deemed “objectionable”. This is to reassure parents and advertisers about the safety of the site when it comes to the process of providing a secure environment to kids and teens.

Ross Levinsohn, head of News Corp’s internet division confirmed while speaking at a New York conference that some of the material taken down had contained hate speech or risqué content. He said: “It’s a problem that’s endemic to the internet – not just MySpace. The site, in the last two months, I think has become safer.”

The website has been reportedly banned in some educational institutes in the USA due to these bad reports related to online predators who are interacting with young people using the site. Incidentally, the site’s targeted audience is a typical web user in the youthful 18 to 30 demographic.
