Billboard to rank mobile ringtone sales
Music market tracker Billboard has said that they would soon begin publishing a chart ranking master ringtones. These ringtones are parts of original songs, which are used by mobile users as their ringtones.
This chart of ringtones would be known as the Hot MasterTones and it would take into consideration data provided by Nielsen Mobile. They would be highlighting the top 20 best-selling master ringtones for the week.
Geoff Mayfield, Billboard’s director of charts said in a statement about these plans: “This is really where the growth has been in ringtones.†They are due to begin anything this coming summer season.
Billboard is already publishing a chart for monophonic and polyphonic ringtones, which are based on synthesized versions of recordings. With the advancement in technologies, master ringtones have become an increasingly important slice of recording industry sales.
