VoIP becoming popular in United Kingdom
As per a new survey estimates, as many as two million British adults used their computers to make phone calls in the past year. And this number is expected to double this year as technology becomes more popular and accessible with more players joining the fray.
Skype is as expected the most popular of the lot. The company made big news recently when they were acquired by the ecommerce giants eBay for a phenomenal price. This research report was released by Continental Research, which interviewed 3,000 adults and found that 48 per cent of the VoIP calls made from the UK last year used Skype.
Microsoft’s MSN Messenger was the second most popular application used for voice chat on the internet. US based Vonage was next followed by UK’s own BT and Wanadoo. The survey also found out that a majority of these users would prefer to expand their usage of the VoIP based telephony service considering it is very cost effective.
James Myring, the associate director of Continental Research added his views: “VoIP usage is admittedly growing from a relatively small base. But as utility bills increase, people will be looking at how they can cut down on their monthly outgoings.”
