Google expects massive growth from the China market

Search engine giants Google were criticized heavily when they confirmed that their Chinese version of the search engine would be censored as per the requirement of the Chinese government.

However, the company has shown no hidden desires to expand their operations in this country which boasts of the second largest internet user base around the world after the United States.

Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt claims that the company expects the Chinese market to contribute a lot to their revenues in the coming years. He said: “I don’t know where (Chinese) revenue growth will be, but it will obviously be large.”

The company would have just around 100 software engineers in China by the middle of 2006 and expects this number to grow to 1000s of software engineers in the coming years. Schmidt added that the company has no choice but to comply with the local rules and demands of the government to operate in a particular country.

Schmidt said: “It is important to operate Google’s worldwide service based on local law and local custom. It is not an option for us to broadly make information available that is illegal or inappropriate or immoral.”

Makes me wonder on why the Indian government cannot get Google to fix India’s map on Google Earth and Google Maps, which shows PoK as an integral part of Pakistan!
