TiVo wins EchoStar patent lawsuit
TiVo Inc. has said that they have won the patent lawsuit filed against satellite television operator EchoStar who they claimed were infringing on their patents for digital video recorders.
This deal resulted in company’s share gaining as much as 20% in the stock market. TiVo added that they would now be seeking a permanent injunction against EchoStar Communications Corp.’s DVR products.
The courts also awarded TiVo a little more than $73 million for lost profits and reasonable royalties. EchoStar on their part added that they were confident that it would prevail in post-trial motions or on appeal.
EchoStar said in a statement: “Among other things, we believe the patent — as interpreted in this case — is overly broad given the technology in existence when Tivo filed its patent.â€
TiVo on their part added that it would continue to defend its intellectual property — raising the possibility, the company might be emboldened to challenge the technology in other DVRs.
