AMD launches their final Single-Core Opteron processor
Microprocessor maker AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) have launched what they called their final Single Core based Opteron processor. The company said that the future of microprocessors is in multi-core technologies.
The new products are Opteron models 256, 856, and these are available in the market for sale. Another model 156 is due on the market within 30 days. These processors has been picked up by computer makers IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystems who have announced their plans to launch products based on these new processors.
These companies are liking this new processor range as it boosts chip performance from 2.8 GHz to 3 GHz. This performance gain comes without any increase in power usage. As a result, computer manufacturers would be able to use these processors on their current systems without modifying them to handle any extra power or heat load.
Sun Microsystems has already said that they would be using these new processors on the entry-level Sun Fire X2100 server.
