U.S. Public Broadcasting System looking towards the internet for growth

The U.S. Public Broadcasting System has said that they are exploring the possibility of providing their content on the internet and portable video playing devices for further growth in the market.

PBS is also considering the option of collaborating with the leaders in this line of business. This might be similar to how Apple has collaborated with Disney to provide their content for sale on their Apple iTunes web store.

PBS CEO Paula Kerger said in a statement: “My goal in running PBS is that no matter what choice consumers in the digital age decide to do … we recognize the need to make content available to any of those platforms, and right now we’re moving in that direction.”

She added that some PBS stations are already making available some of their content online. However, they lack the financial resources available with private broadcasting companies to explore these possibilities in a huge way.

Kerger added: “So I think we probably will look at partnerships. I think we will not do a full flung leap into any one area. I think we’ll start to experiment and I think we’ll experiment along the product that seems to make the most sense.”
