Seagate to ship today its first perpendicular 3.5″ hard drive
Storage solutions industry giants Seagate are due to launch today their first perpendicular 3.5″ hard drive product. This would also be the first such product from any hard disk manufacturer in the market.
Seagate is planning to target this new product range at enterprise applications and this Cheetah 15K.5 would double the capacities of the current generation products. They are also claiming that these new products would improve the performance of the drives by as much as 30%.
Seagate’s older generation non-perpendicular 15K.4 generation offered storage capacities of 36 GB, 73 GB, and 146 GB. This new range 15K.5 is available with 300 GB (four platters), 147 GB (two platters), and 73 GB (one platter).
Seagate also claims that this new Cheetah drive would be the first hard drive to break the 100 MB/s data transfer barrier. Prices of these drives are yet unannounced.
