Del Mar College bans MySpace.com on campus
Yet another educational institute in the United States has banned the popular online social networking website MySpace.com. The latest in the line is the Texas based Del Mar College. Students of this college would have to access this website from outside their campus if they want to stay in touch with their friends.
The reason for this blockage is that the college feels that the high usage on this particular website was slowing down the internet on the campus. The investigation found that students hooked onto MySpace.com were using a lot of bandwidth.
August Alfonso, the school’s chief of information and technology claimed that as much as 40% of the daily traffic and bandwidth usage was on this website. President Carlos Garcia added: “This was more about us being able to offer Web-based instruction, and MySpace.com was slowing everything down.â€
Students however are divided on this step taken by the tech department. Some claims that it is good, as they would now concentrate on more important things on the campus while others believe that since they are paying for the net access, they should be free to surf around where they want. It makes sense considering MySpace.com is essential a legal service and does not involve p2p file transfers.
