Sharp is now Japan’s largest mobile phone maker

Nokia might be the world’s largest maker of mobile phones; Motorola might be dominating the US market but it is Sharp, which now heads the list in the highly competitive Japanese market.

Sharp has now become the leading mobile phone maker in the Japanese market for the first time. This emerged in the data released by MM Research Institute. The results also show the highly competitive mobile market in this country where many players are competing head to head to lure in more customers.

Sharp now heads the list beating players like NEC (NASDAQ:NIPNY) and Matsushita (NYSE:MC). The company seems to have gained market share in Japan as they concentrated on offering phones with advanced features, such as high-quality LCD screens and easy-to-use camera phones.

A senior Sharp representative said in a statement: “Since we make the liquid crystal displays and the charge-coupled devices [for camera phones] in-house, we were able to offer the latest high-specification devices in a timely manner.”
