Nokia and iPass to develop dual-mode mobile phones

Mobile market giants Nokia is working with iPass to develop client software for Nokia dual-mode phones. These phones would be capable of connecting to the public Wi-Fi hot spots enabling the users to make calls using VoIP technology.

They would be partnering with owners of hot spots and have plans to offer access to over 50,000 hotspots around the world through a single account.

iPass already has software solutions for the Microsoft Windows and Windows Mobile OS based mobile products. The company also support the Apple Mac OS X.

Nokia and iPass would be initially releasing solutions to power the handsets with cellular and wireless LAN capability that are based on the Nokia Series 80 and Series 60 software platforms.

They have further plans to deliver software for the Nokia 9300i and 9500 by summer.
