AMD continues to gain in server market with Opteron processor

Advanced Micro Devices is continuing to make its mark in the server market with their Opteron range of high performance microprocessors.

According to the latest statistics, Opteron now accounts for 22.1 percent of all x86 server processors shipped into the market.

These figures are from the research group Mercury Research. The company also boosted its share of the server market by 26 percent compared with its fourth-quarter server market share of 16.4 percent.

This is an improvement of around 250 percent compared with the previous year’s first quarter. Market analysts believe that the better performing Opteron processors would continue to dominate the Intel based processors in the near future.

An AMD representative said in a statement: “While (AMD) is excited about its performance; we also recognize that it cannot stand still if it hopes to continue these impressive strides through 2006 and 2007.”
