Helio LLC launches mobile services for young people

Helio LLC has launched a mobile service for young people in their twenties. The company is a joint venture of SK Telecom and EarthLink Inc and they are targeting the youth who are more interested in value added services like web surfing from their mobile devices.

They would be running their services on rented space on the Sprint Nextel Corp. network. They are just one of the many new players in the market trying to break into the lucrative mobile market by offering a little more than traditional players by targeting specific segments in the US.

The company is hoping to signup 3 million customers in the next three years. The cheapest package on the service would cost $85 a month and would include 1,000 minutes of talk time. This is somewhat expensive than other services but include data services such as picture messaging and Web surfing in the price.

Helio believes that simple packages would be more attractive to the youth customers in the longer run as they plan to target the users who are more interested in getting the latest data services than paying for cheap mobile calls.

Helio Chief Executive Sky Dayton said in a statement: “We wanted to radically simplify the pricing in the industry. (Mobile users) expect it all to be included because to them data is the main event and voice is just another thing they do with their phone.”
