Microsoft, Qualcomm collaborates on mobile phone technology

Microsoft has said in a statement that they are collaborating with Qualcomm. The two companies signed a deal, which would make it possible for Qualcomm Inc.’s mobile phone chips to support Windows Mobile operating system.

As a result, now Qualcomm’s customers would be able to develop smartphones, which would support the Microsoft’s mobile operating system. This would bring newer functionalities to these phones like e-mail, mobile TV, and word processing.

Market analysts believe that the deal is of particular importance to Microsoft, as it would get them a greater share in the Smartphone market. Qualcomm is already the dominating player in the market for CDMA chips, which powers most of the mobile phones in the US market.

They are also selling technology licenses and chips for W-CDMA, which is more popular in Europe. Qualcomm are now expected to launch new products supporting the Windows Mobile platform sometime later this year.
