BSkyB to test MediaFLO Multicasting in Europe
British Sky Broadcasting Limited has said in a statement that they would be testing out Qualcomm’s MediaFLO mobile TV technology in the United Kingdom. For this, they have signed on a non-binding letter of intent with the technology provider.
This test is expected to begin in the starting of the summer season and would feature 10 channels of content. They would support a small number of non-commercial devices.
BSkyB has been offering mobile TV services, dubbed “Sky Mobile TVâ€, since the end of 2005 in partnership with Vodafone.
The company had to start these new trials after their competitor O2 announced limited trials of a similar TV service based on the competing DVB-H multicasting technology.
Qualcomm’s MediaFLO unit on the other hand is also working with Verizon to deploy wireless mobile TV services in the United States through Verizon Wireless.
