BT Group to offer mobile Internet calls to businesses

BT Group Plc has said in a statement that they are soon going to offer businesses the ability to make cheap (even free) calls using VoIP technology. This service would be available using a single mobile handset.

This service would be called “Enterprise Fixed Mobile Convergence” and it would allow the users with dual-mode (3G/Wi-Fi, GPRS/Wi-Fi or GSM/Wi-Fi) handsets to make use of this new facility. However, the pricing of such a service was not detailed as BT plans to launch it by next year.

Users would be able to make VoIP calls whenever they enter an area covered by the firm’s network or a BT wireless zone. When the user comes out of it, the phone would switch to the regular telecom network for the call.

BT is using the expertise provided by Alcatel for this technology. The company said in a statement: “No longer will employees be required to have a mobile, a data device and a fixed phone as everything will be possible from a single handset … at home, in the office and at BT’s Openzone hotspots plus all the benefits of normal mobile.”
