Spammers win as Blue Security shuts down

The anti-spam venture Blue Security has finally closed shop after it was attacked by a major spamming network.

That attack resulted in a denial-of-service attack, which affected some of the largest network of blogging sites on the internet.

Market analysts now believe that Blue Security should have been prepared to get attacked and it’s a shame that they decided to close their operations after just the first major attempt from their targeted groups.

The company started its operations last year and had built up a database of more than 500,000 users. Blue Security said in a statement that they were closing their operations, as it couldn’t sustain the fight against spammers.

Eran Reshef, Blue Security chief executive said in a statement: “Several leading spammers viewed [us] as a strategic threat to their spam business. After recovering from the attack, we determined that once we reactivated the Blue Community, spammers would resume their attacks. We cannot take the responsibility for an ever-escalating cyber war through our continued operations.”

He added: “As much as it saddens us, we believe this is the responsible thing to do.”

Blue Security had to shut down, not because they couldn’t technologically get back on their feet, but because major ISPs have obviously made a point by threatening of law suits for damage and loss of revenue caused by the DDos.

This is what lies beneath the “innocent users and collateral damage”.

I don’t think Eran Shereff and Eran Aloni were stupid enough to start this business without knowing they were tackling really dirty players. So much for their good intentions. Their stepping down is a sad event, not because the spammers win, rather because they are showing how short sighted they have been with all this. All the players in the anti-spam industry which they approached prior to start operation told them it was a bad idea.

I am sad that they had to step down, I am sad to see that the spammers will keep going as they please, but nonetheless: shame on Blue Security for letting down thousands of users who took some loss in the last two weeks.
