Lenovo computers won’t be used for classified work by US government

In an interesting development, the US government has said that they won’t be using the 16,000 computers it bought from a Chinese firm with links to the Beijing government for classified operations.

Assistant Secretary of State Richard Griffin added that the department would make sure that they would alter their procurement process to ensure US information security was guaranteed.

This decision came after Rep Frank Wolf expressed national security concerns with regards to computing hardware being purchased from Chinese companies.

Interestingly, Lenovo just recently acquired the personal computer division of the US based tech giants IBM. They also claim that such concerns were unwarranted and said the computers posed no security risk.

The company has already moved its executive headquarters from China to the US. However, the fact remains that a Chinese government agency owns 28 percent of Lenovo. IBM holds around 13 percent stake in the company.
