BT to launch Wi-Fi coverage in a dozen cities
The telecoms giant BT has signed on deals with 12 councils to provide widespread Wi-Fi coverage in these cities.
The first trials of this technology implementation have been successful and the company is aiming to launch their services in the first six cities by next year.
Web users in these cities would be able to use this network connectivity using pay-as-you-go vouchers or subscribe for longer-term use.
As part of the deal, BT would be hooking up tin can-sized antennas at public locations to make the net access available across broad swathes of the 12 cities.
The deals have been signed on with Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff and Westminster in central London.
Steve Andrews, BT’s head of converged communications services said in a statement on this initiative: “This first phase of 12 cities is just the start. We are already negotiating with many other cities.”
