Sony BMG CD Settlement approved by court

U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald approved a settlement of lawsuits against the world’s second-largest music label Sony BMG.

This settlement would give away free downloadable songs to consumers for flawed anti-piracy software on compact discs supplied in the market by the company.

This would also mean that Sony BMG would stop manufacturing Audio CDs loaded with software, which was declared a Spyware by several security application developers.

The issue was created when it was discovered that Sony was using a flawed XCP DRM technology on their audio discs, which left PCs vulnerable to hacking attempts on the internet.

This deal would see consumers who bought the CDs receive replacement discs without the anti-piracy technologies. In addition, they would also be entitled to choose one of two incentive packages that provide cash or free music downloads.
