YouTube: Market leaders in online video search and hosting

As per incoming surveys, YouTube has been declared as the undisputed leader in the video search and hosting market.

The company has almost a 50% market share and leads some big rivals including Google, Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft’s MSN.

The statistics have been released by survey company Hitwise and they claim that for the week ending May 20, YouTube had almost 43 percent of all visits to video Web sites.

MySpace.com came second with a market share of 24.2%.

Other players include Yahoo (9.6 percent), MSN (9.2 percent), Google (6.5 percent), and AOL (4.3 percent). The remaining players in top 10 are iFilm, Grouper Networks, Dailymotion.com, and Custom One Media’s vSocial.com.

Google could gain in the coming months as they have just recently made it easier for users to upload their videos on the Google Video service and are now promoting it more amongst the users. They also have a new mechanism to advertise online using video ads. This should help them monetize the video operations. YouTube is rumored to be loosing too much money and are mostly relying on investor’s money.
