EarthLink to bring wireless networking to New Orleans

EarthLink would be installing wireless networks in the city of New Orleans. The city and company officials confirmed this. This would further boost the existing network as the effort faces massive lobbying from the telephone companies.

The aim is to provide free internet access to the citizens of the New Orleans city as they rebuild their city. Telephone companies are against this move, as they believe that the effort would hurt their bottom line in this region.

They are arguing that the state laws say that a publicly owned, wireless network that offers fast wireless service is illegal. However, looking at the situation in this particular city destructed by the hurricane, the city officials are making an exception.

EarthLink’s president of municipal networks, Donald Berryman said that they would be providing free internet access for a period of time that residents need. After that the high-speed connectivity would be made a paid for service.
