NEC and Matsushita might collaborate on mobile technology
Japan based NEC Corp. has said in a statement that they are currently talking with Matsushita Electric to discuss ways to cooperate in their cellphone business.
Both the companies are considering this collaboration to cut costs and reduce their losses in the mobile phone operations.
NEC President Kaoru Yano however clarified that they had no intentions on integrating its mobile phone business with that of Matsushita Electric Industrial. He said in a statement: “We have agreed to start talks to create a collaboration that will make the best use of the economies of scale, while maintaining the two companies’ brands.â€
Interestingly, NEC and Matsushita are the first companies to bring high-speed third-generation (3G) phones based on the W-CDMA format in Japan. They are hoping that this new technology would help them gain new users both in Japan and outside Japan.
These two companies are also already talking with Texas Instruments on similar cooperation on mobile technologies.
