$100 laptop computer to cost $135 initially

Nicholas Negroponte’s $100 laptop computer is expected to cost $135 in the initial years as it is now expected to be available to children in developing countries by the middle of next year.

One Laptop Per Child Project (OLPC) however clarified that the economies of scale would help them bring down the cost of the machine to $100 by 2008.

This is further expected to drop down to around $50 per computer by 2010. Negroponte said in a statement: “The World Bank asks us, ‘Have you done studies?’ Well, we haven’t. But there is no time for pilots. Those days are over. This is a slam-dunk, as long as we execute, execute, execute.”

Some of their partners in this project include big names like Red Hat, Google, Advanced Micro Devices, News Corporation, BrightStar, Marvell Technology Group, Nortel Networks, eBay, 3M, and Quanta Computer.

Quanta Computer is expected to be one of the primary builders of this fascinating machine aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the developing nations around the world.
