AMD to ship quad-core processors next year
Microprocessor Company AMD has plans to launch quad-core processors for servers, workstations and high-end desktops by mid-2007. These plans were revealed by the company’s Chief Technology Officer Phil Hester.
AMD also has plans to launch a new dual-core design for mainstream desktops around that time. These new processors would be using AMD’s new 65nm process chip architecture. Hester was addressing a room full of analysts at the company’s annual Technology Day in Sunnyvale, California.
Their bigger rivals Intel is also due to ship four-core chips in mid-2007. AMD is aiming to at least match that launch if not outpace it.
The company was the first one to showcase dual-core processors and was also the first one to launch 64-bit processors. AMD aims to continue with these innovations, which has helped them gain a considerable market share in the server segment.
AMD also has plans to gain market share in the laptop market, which is currently dominated by market leader Intel’s Centrino range of microprocessors.
