General Motors to bring Captiva and a compact car in Russia
World’s largest makers of automobiles General Motors has confirmed that they would be making the Captiva sport utility vehicle and a new compact car in the Russian market.
The company would be investing around $115 million in the plant they began building on Tuesday in Russia’s second city of St Petersburg.
GM expects the production to begin in late 2008 with initial full-year capacity of 25,000 vehicles.
GM statement quoted Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner saying: “This project clearly demonstrates our commitment to Russia as one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.â€
He further said: “With the addition of this new, wholly-owned facility, GM and its partners will be able to assemble more than 100,000 cars a year in Russia.”
