Reports claim Yahoo! is the worst offender in pleasing Chinese authorities
Reporters without Borders have claimed that their research has shown that Yahoo! is the worst offender when it comes to breaking its international policies to please the Chinese government by censoring their search results in the region.
The group said that their research discovered that the Yahoo.cn website censored material more vigorously than Google’s Google.cn, MSN’s MSN.cn and the local player Baidu.com services.
RSF claimed that when they tried to search keywords like “Tibet independence” in the Yahoo! Search Engine customized for Chinese users, the search produced nothing and the search engine was blocked for a particular time from access.
The group added in a statement: “While Microsoft has just said it does not operate censorship, Reporters Without Borders found that the Chinese version of its search engine displays similar results to those of Google.cn.â€
It further went on to say: “Microsoft, like Google, appears not to filter content by blocking certain keywords but by refusing to include websites considered illegal by the authorities.”
