Flights at night bad for environment?
Researchers have said that reducing flights at nighttime can help reduce the contribution of aviation to global warming by the aviation industry.
The nighttime flights are more damaging as the white streaks of condensation (contrails) left by the planes end up trapping energy emitted from the Earth’s surface.
This does not happen during the daytime as these contrails reflect some of the sun’s energy back into space leading to a cooling effect on the earth’s surface.
The researchers discovered an astonishing fact while studying the effect of nighttime flights in the UK. They said that 25 percent of flights in Britain that takes off during the evening-night period contributed to 60-80 percent of global warming linked with contrails.
The effect of this factor has a minor effect on the changing environment but it becomes more and more important as the traffic in air travel rises in the coming years, which would bring more flights to the nighttime.
