New Zealand to convert to digital broadcasting

New Zealand would soon start to convert their television signals to digital broadcasts as they aim to allow the companies to offer more channels, interactive TV and broadcasts. These services could then broadcast signals to alternative devices like mobiles and internet powered devices.

New Zealand Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey said in a statement that Television New Zealand, Radio New Zealand and TVWorks would start digital broadcasts next year. The government itself would be investing $16 million over the next five year on this technology.

Steve added that this technology is essential to securing the future viability of free-to-air broadcasting. It would also help companies like Television New Zealand and TVWorks compete better against rivals like Sky Network Television who are the country’s largest pay-television company and are already providing digital broadcasting services.
