Samsung considering building a HD DVD/Blu-Ray compatible player
Samsung is supporting the Sony’s Blu-Ray format and has already launched a player capable of playing this next generation storage format. However, the company has now said that they are considering the possibilities of launching a player, which can play both the formats fighting it out to become the standard for taking over from the DVD format.
Samsung just launched their BD-P1000 player, which is the first one to appear in the market to support the Sony’s Blu-Ray format. And this starts the competition with the already launched HD DVD players in the market. Sony has launched a couple of Blu-Ray titles to support this launch.
There are few differences between the two formats but they are still incompatible with each other. This becomes a major issue for the user, as they have to decide on which player they would purchase considering movie studios are also divided between the two formats. Few of them are planning to launch titles in both the formats.
Kim Du-Hyon, an assistant manager in Samsung’s home-platform product planning division spoke about company’s plans: “We don’t have a plan to make an HD DVD-only player but are considering a universal player. We are preparing HD DVD [support] now and if we launch a universal player it will be the end of this year or early next year.”
