Geoportal.fr: France launches its own challenger to Google Earth

European nation France has launched its own challenger to the Google Earth application. Their initiative is called Geoportal and it is available on the website www.geoportail.fr.

This website is offering high-resolution aerial imagery of its entire territory and the launch of this initiative was chaired by none other than France President Jacques Chirac.

The service has been made available for free and allows users to zoom in to within 50 centimeters of the ground. This makes it the first service of its kind for a European country.

Chirac spoke at the launch ceremony: “This is a step forward for all citizens, which places France at the forefront of new technologies.”

The portal has been developed by the state-funded National Geographic Institute and has been started with funds of around six-million-euro.

    Hi All Experts,
Does anyone use google earth images as ground image planes for use in aerial scenes. I know how to stitch them together but are there any tools or tricks to make sure that the images are at the same height, angle and such to make sure they stitch well. I know in the pro version you can get bigger images but im not going to pay for the pro version when i could stitch multiple images together…
