Rosedale 2: Intel set to launch chipset with dual WiMax support

Intel Corp. is due to launch a new client chipset, which would support both the fixed and mobile versions of the WiMax wireless broadband technologies.

Intel is one of the biggest supporters of this under development networking technologies and has launched a series of products based on it.

WiMax basically comes in two flavors. One is fixed wireless mode and the other is for mobile devices. The earlier one is being developed to act as a replacement for broadband cable access or DSL. The mobile version is being developed for wireless devices.

The company is already selling a fixed WiMax chipset called Rosedale and this new version would be called Rosedale 2. Intel said that they have developed this chip completely in-house and they are now planning to come out with a single-chip radio called Ofer-R, which supports both Wi-Fi and WiMax.
